Thanjavur Thatha Paati Dolls – A Heartwarming Celebration of Grandparents & Indian Heritage

Two beautiful dolls. A lifetime of wisdom, love and family memories.

Celebrate the warmth of grandparents and the timeless beauty of Indian traditions with this charming Thanjavur Thatha Paati Doll Pair, lovingly handcrafted by skilled artisans from Tamil Nadu, India.

Representing a traditional South Indian grandfather (Thatha) and grandmother (Paati), these delightful dolls capture the simplicity, affection and wisdom of the elders who hold a special place in our families.

Beautifully dressed in traditional attire, with expressive faces, colourful hand-painted details and charming head-bobbing movements, these dolls bring a touch of nostalgia and cultural heritage to your home.

❤️ Thatha & Paati – The Heart of Every Family

In Indian culture, grandparents are cherished as storytellers, guides and guardians of family traditions.

For many of us, childhood memories are filled with our grandparents' love, traditional stories, delicious homemade food and the wisdom they shared.

These beautifully handcrafted dolls celebrate that special relationship, reminding us of our roots and the importance of passing traditions from one generation to the next.

🌸 One Beautiful Bond, Many Indian Languages

Grandparents are lovingly called by different names across India:

  • Tamil: தாத்தா & பாட்டி (Thatha & Paati)

  • Telugu: తాతయ్య & అమ్మమ్మ / నానమ్మ (Thathayya & Ammamma / Nanamma)

  • Hindi: दादा-दादी / नाना-नानी (Dada-Dadi / Nana-Nani)

  • Kannada: ತಾತ & ಅಜ್ಜಿ (Thatha & Ajji)

  • Malayalam: അപ്പൂപ്പൻ & അമ്മൂമ്മ (Appooppan & Ammoomma)

  • Marathi: आजोबा & आजी (Aajoba & Aaji)

  • Gujarati: દાદા & દાદી (Dada & Dadi)

Different names, different languages, but the same beautiful bond of unconditional love.

🌿 The Heritage of Thanjavur Dancing Dolls

Originating from Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu, the traditional Thalaiyatti Bommai craft is celebrated for its unique bobbing movements and colourful handmade designs.

These dolls are carefully crafted using traditional moulding and painting techniques. Their cleverly balanced construction allows the heads to gently nod, giving the dolls their delightful character.

Thanjavur dolls are part of India's Geographical Indication (GI) recognised craft heritage, representing generations of remarkable artistic skills.
