Origin & History
Channapatna crafts are among India’s most loved heritage creations—known for their cheerful colours, clean forms, and safe, eco-friendly making process. Often called the “Land of Wooden Toys”, Channapatna represents a perfect blend of tradition and modern design, making it ideal for gifting, home décor, and conscious living.
At Royal Heritage Hub, we curate premium Channapatna products that celebrate authenticity, quality finishing, and artisan empowerment—especially supporting rural women who are deeply involved in this craft ecosystem.
History and craft tradition
The town’s craft heritage dates back to the 18th century, when artisans are believed to have learned lacquerware techniques under the patronage of Tipu Sultan. The distinctive Channapatna toys are made primarily from Wrightia tinctoria wood (locally called “ale mara”), known for its fine grain and workability. Craftsmen shape and polish the toys using lac, a natural resin, and organic colors.
Channapatna craft originates from Channapatna town in Ramanagara district, Karnataka, and has a long history dating back to the 18th century. The craft gained recognition under royal patronage and evolved with influences from lacquer traditions introduced through cultural exchanges.
This heritage craft is now protected under the Geographical Indication (GI) tag, preserving its authenticity and preventing imitation.
Economic and cultural significance
Channapatna’s toy-making industry supports thousands of local artisans and small enterprises. The toys’ eco-friendly production process has earned them a Geographical Indication (GI) tag. The craft also plays a cultural role in Karnataka’s identity and is promoted through handicraft fairs, government initiatives, and export programs.

Traditional Technique (How It’s Made)
Channapatna craft is known for lathe-turning and lacquer finishing, a process that requires precision and control.
Step-by-step process:
- Wood selection & seasoning to reduce moisture and increase durability
- Lathe turning to shape the toy or object with perfect symmetry
- Colour application using lac sticks while the piece spins
- Friction heat melting fixes the colour into the wood surface
- Polishing & finishing to achieve a glossy, premium look
- Final inspection for smoothness, balance, and colour consistency
This technique creates the signature Channapatna feel—soft to touch, bright in appearance, and durable in use.
