Navaratri Festival & Golu Dolls Tradition in South India

Navaratri Festival & Golu Dolls Tradition in South India

Celebrating Nine Nights of Culture, Devotion & Handcrafted Beauty

🧘♀️ Understanding Navaratri – The Festival of Nine Nights

Navaratri, meaning 'nine nights', is one of India’s most spiritually vibrant festivals. Celebrated across the country with regional variations, this sacred festival honours the divine feminine energy — Shakti — in her many forms. Each day is dedicated to a different aspect of the Goddess, and the festival culminates with Vijayadashami (Dussehra), symbolising the victory of good over evil.

While northern India celebrates Navaratri with fasting, garba dancing, and Ramlila plays, the southern states have a unique and deeply artistic way of marking this time — through the tradition of Golu or Bommala Koluvu.

🪑 What is Golu / Bommala Koluvu?

In Tamil Nadu, it is known as Golu; in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, it’s called Bommala Koluvu, and in Karnataka, it’s often referred to as Gombe Habba. While the names differ, the essence is the same — an elaborate staircase-like arrangement of dolls, idols, and miniature scenes that narrate stories from Indian mythology, culture, and daily life.

Families set up wooden or metal ‘Golu Padi’ (steps or stands) — traditionally in odd numbers (3, 5, 7, or 9) — and beautifully arrange clay dolls, handcrafted figurines, wooden toys, and divine idols passed down through generations.

🧑🤝🧑 A Tradition of Togetherness and Culture

This sacred display becomes the centre of celebration during the nine nights of Navaratri. Every evening, families invite neighbours and friends over for ‘Golu Darshan’, devotional singing (bhajans), and the sharing of prasadam (offering). Young girls and married women are honoured with return gifts (tamboolam) — often containing bangles, turmeric, kumkum, and small handcrafted items.

The entire ritual of setting up the Bommala Koluvu is filled with devotion, creativity, and joy — as families work together to build scenes from epic stories, villages, temples, or divine events. It’s not just a religious observance; it’s a celebration of art, family, storytelling, and community bonding.

🎁 How Our Handcrafted Items Support the Golu Tradition

At Royal Heritage Hub, we are proud to bring a curated collection of handmade wooden dolls, divine figurines, eco-friendly toys, and decorative items that perfectly complement this sacred tradition.

Our artisans — especially women from Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka — handcraft these pieces using natural softwood, non-toxic dyes, and centuries-old techniques that have adorned Golu displays for generations. Whether you’re starting your first Golu setup or continuing a family tradition, our collection helps you bring authenticity, elegance, and cultural pride to your Navaratri celebrations.

🪔 Some of our popular Golu display items include:

  • Krishna with Cow & Flute Sets
  • Traditional Village Scenes
  • Mythological Characters from Ramayana & Mahabharata
  • Temple Figures & Decorative Arch Sets
  • Customised Return Gift Sets for Guests

🏠 Celebrating Golu in the UK and Beyond

Many Indian families in the UK and around the world continue to keep this tradition alive, even in smaller homes or apartments. That’s why we also provide foldable, compact Golu stands and lightweight dolls — easy to set up, store, and reuse every year.

Navaratri is not just about decoration — it’s about devotion, storytelling, and keeping heritage alive across borders. With our handcrafted Golu items, you're not just buying décor — you're celebrating tradition, supporting rural artisans, and passing culture forward.

🙏 Final Thoughts: Golu is More Than a Display — It's a Celebration of Legacy

The Golu / Bommala Koluvu tradition stands as a beautiful symbol of how Indian festivals blend devotion with creativity. It’s a time when art meets spirit, and generations come together to keep the flame of tradition burning bright.

This Navaratri, let your Golu steps shine with authentic, handmade dolls that carry the essence of India’s living crafts.
