Etikoppaka Handcrafts

Etikoppaka crafts represent one of India’s finest examples of sustainable wooden artistry, where nature, skill, and tradition come together. At Royal Heritage Hub, our Etikoppaka collection is a tribute to this 400+ year-old living craft that continues to thrive through artisan families—especially rural women—who preserve its legacy with patience and pride.

Origin & Historical Background

Etikoppaka is a village in the Anakapalli district of Andhra Pradesh, India, known for its centuries-old tradition of handcrafted wooden toys and lacquerware. The village has gained national and international recognition for preserving eco-friendly artisanal practices using natural dyes and sustainable wood sources.

Etikoppaka’s toy-making tradition dates back over 400 years. Local artisans carve toys from Ankudu wood (Wrightia tinctoria), a lightweight species native to the region. After carving, artisans apply natural pigments made from seeds, leaves, and stones, finishing with lac, a resin that gives the toys their characteristic sheen. The resulting craft, often called “Etikoppaka lacquer toys,” is noted for smooth texture and vibrant, earthy hues.

Cultural and economic significance

The toy industry is the primary livelihood for many villagers. Designs range from traditional figurines and kitchen sets to educational toys. The Government of India and state agencies support cooperatives and training centers to modernize production while maintaining traditional aesthetics. The craft’s emphasis on natural materials makes it an example of sustainable rural industry.

Recognition and preservation

Etikoppaka toys received a Geographical Indication (GI) tag in 2017, highlighting their cultural and regional uniqueness. Craft clusters and NGOs promote workshops to attract younger artisans and global buyers. The village is part of broader initiatives to protect India’s intangible cultural heritage through market linkage and eco-friendly innovation.
